Version 4.0
==========================================
ENVELOPE PRINTING ON THE DESKJET PRINTER
==========================================
DJLOPE is a program designed to print envelopes on the Deskjet
family of printers. With it you can keep up to 250 names and
addresses in each of several multiple databases which can be
printed, displayed on the screen, and searched. With DJLOPE, you
can control printing of your return address of up to five lines and
the placement (margins) of the address portion of the envelope.
The user can keep up to six different return addresses and switch
easily among them. The program supports DeskJet font cartridges and
built-in fonts. The ability of the user to create multiple
databases for many purposes (e.g., family, business, personal), and
the easy interface make this program ideal for use by all DeskJet
users. Version 4.0 also scans your addresses for five- or nine-
digit Zip codes, and prints the PostNet barcode above the address
in a Postal Service approved manner.
WHAT'S NEW! ==> * All-new user interface

Registration ID: 705
Fee: $14.95
=================================================================
QUICK START INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXPERIENCED PC/DOS USERS
=================================================================
DJLOPE is very easy to use for everyone. If you are anxious to
give the program a "Test Drive" without wading through a lot of DOS
instructions, please do the following:
TO RUN DJLOPE FROM A FLOPPY DISK: Ensure that the disk is not write
protected, as the program creates several files upon loading. Place
the disk containing the DJLOPE.EXE file in drive A or B, log onto
that drive and enter DJLOPE at the A> or B> prompt.
TO RUN DJLOPE FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE: Copy the files listed in the
Packing List above to your hard drive. It is suggested that you
create a subdirectory on your hard drive (named DJLOPE) to hold the
DJLOPE.EXE and related files. The program will create additional
files upon first executing. Type DJLOPE to load the program into
your computer's memory.
The opening screen asks if you would like to print an order form
(making registration easy as filling in a few blanks and putting
the form in the mail). Press '$' to print the form, any other key
to Test Drive the program. When the Main Menu is displayed,
pressing the appropriate key will allow you to access each feature
of the program. You will probably want to configure your Return
Address first, followed by typing in some addresses before you
print an envelope. This documentation is organized in the same
order as choices are listed in the Main Menu.
=================================================================
INSTRUCTIONS FOR NOVICE COMPUTER USERS
=================================================================
New users are encouraged to print out this documentation as an aid
to learning how to use this program. For example, if the
'DJLOPE.DOC' file is on a floppy disk in Drive A, at an 'A:\>'
prompt, type 'COPY DJLOPE.DOC LPT1:' and press the [ENTER] key to
copy the documentation to your DeskJet (assuming the printer is
connected to printer port LPT1:. If connected to LPT2: or LPT3:,
change the command accordingly.)
DJLOPE can be run from either a floppy disk or a hard disk. Four
files will be created by the program: DJLOPE.CFG (the file that
will contain configuration information for the program),
RETADDR.FIL (will contain your return address information) and
ADDRESS.LST (the default database that is created when you start
the program), and RETADDR.LST, the database that will hold your
return address choices. These will be created in the directory
containing the DJLOPE.EXE file.
=================================================================
RUNNING DJLOPE FROM A FLOPPY DISK
=================================================================
Be sure your floppy disk is not write protected (the program
creates files on the disk). If the disk is 5-1/4", be sure there
is no tab stuck over the notch on the top of your diskette. If the
disk is a 3-1/2" size, look at the underside of the disk (the metal
circular hub will be visible . . . hold the disk so that the
rectangular metal part is at the bottom of the disk). Be sure that
the little square window at the upper left corner is closed (down)
so that you can't see through the hole). To run the program from a
floppy disk drive, place the disk containing the DJLOPE.EXE file in
Drive A or Drive B. Log on to that drive by typing its letter name
followed by a colon (:), then press the ENTER key. Now type DJLOPE
at the DOS prompt.
In a few seconds, the program will load and display an opening
screen asking you if you want to print a registration form before
continuing. Printing the form now will make registering the
program as ease as filling out the form and dropping it in the mail
with your check. To print the form, Press the '$' key. To 'Test
Drive' DJLOPE without printing the form, press any other key.
=================================================================
INSTALLING DJLOPE ON A HARD DISK
=================================================================
To install the program on a hard disk, first make a subdirectory
called DJLOPE on your hard disk to hold the programs files. Here's
how. You should be at a DOS prompt on the drive you intend to use
for DJLOPE installation. For instance, if you want to install the
program on Drive C, type 'C:' and press the [ENTER] key.
Begin by typing 'CD\' and press [ENTER]. Assuming you are
installing on Drive C, you should now see 'C:\>' as your prompt.
If you do not see this prompt, please type 'PROMPT $P$G' and press
the [ENTER] key.
Next, type 'MD DJLOPE' at your C:\> prompt, then press the [ENTER]
key. This makes a subdirectory (storage area) called DJLOPE on
your hard disk.
If the program is currently on a floppy disk, place that disk in
Drive A or Drive B. We will assume that the disk drive is Drive A
for this example. Then, log on to the floppy drive by typing 'A:'
and press the [ENTER] key. Your prompt should now be "A:\>".
Type 'DIR' and press [ENTER]. You will see a list of files on the
floppy drive. Look for a file called 'DJLOPE.EXE'. If you see
this file listed on your screen, you should also see the other
files in the "Packing List" above. Copy the files to your hard
drive by typing 'COPY DJLOPE.* C:\DJLOPE' and press the [ENTER]
key. If all goes well, DOS will report that four files have been
copied. If there is an error message, re-read these instructions
and be sure you are spelling everything correctly. DOS is very
unforgiving of mis-spelled words!
If, when you type DIR as instructed above, you do NOT see the
DJLOPE.EXE file, look for a subdirectory called DJLOPE. It will
appear on your screen similar to a file listing, but will have
'<DIR>' after the DJLOPE name. If you see this type of listing,
you will need to change directories. Do so by typing 'CD DJLOPE'
and press the [ENTER] key. Now, typing 'DIR' and pressing [ENTER]
should display the four file names as listed in the Packing List
above. Copy the files to your hard drive by typing 'COPY
DJLOPE.* C:\DJLOPE' and press the [ENTER] key. DOS will report
that four files have been copied.
If you have downloaded the program from a bulletin board, the files
extracted from the compressed file may be in a subdirectory on your
hard drive rather than on a floppy disk. If this is the case,
after you use the 'MD DJLOPE' command as instructed above, change
to the subdirectory containing the DJLOPE files. For this example,
we will assume the files are in a subdirectory called COMMPROG on
drive C. Type 'CD \COMMPROG' and press [ENTER]. Next, type 'DIR
DJLOPE*.*' and press [ENTER] to confirm that you are in the correct
subdirectory. Your should see the names of four files displayed
(from Packing List above). Copy these files into your newly
created DJLOPE subdirectory by typing 'COPY DJLOPE*.* C:\DJLOPE'
and press [ENTER]. DOS should report '4 files copied.' Now change
back to the DJLOPE directory by typing 'CD \DJLOPE' and press
[ENTER]. Now go to the section below titled "RUNNING DJLOPE FROM
YOUR HARD DRIVE" to continue.
=================================================================
RUNNING DJLOPE UNDER MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.X
=================================================================
DJLOPE will also run as a DOS application under Windows 3.x. Follow
the instructions in your Windows manual for adding a DOS
application. An Icon file (DJLOPE.ICO) and program information file
(DJLOPE.PIF) is included in this archive. These files can be
installed by following the Windows instructions for installing an
icon file. DJLOPE is normally well-behaved in the DOS environment,
but if you find a conflict with Windows, please read the Windows
instructions on PIF files and configure the supplied DJLOPE.PIF
file to those specifications.
=================================================================
RUNNING DJLOPE FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE
=================================================================
To load the program from your hard drive, log on to the drive and
directory containing the DJLOPE.EXE file. Assuming you have just
copied the files to your Drive C and DJLOPE subdirectory, from your
A:\> prompt, type 'C:' and press [ENTER]. Then type 'CD DJLOPE'
and press [ENTER]. Now type 'DJLOPE' and press [ENTER]. The
program will load into memory and display the Main Menu on your
screen.
=================================================================
USING THE DJLOPE PROGRAM
=================================================================
The following sections of the documentation explain each selection
of the Main Menu in the order it appears on the Menu
itself.However, if you are using DJLOPE for the first time, you
will probably prefer to configure (customize) the program before
you begin. See the "Configure" section below.
=================================================================
A - ADD NEW NAMES TO DATABASE
=================================================================
Press 'A' to add names to your address list. the first time you
use the program, DJLOPE will create a database file called
ADDRESS.LST for you and default to that file (you will see the name
of the current database in the bottom left corner of your screen).
You may add names to it at this time, or create a new database file
with your own choice of names. If you choose to add names to
ADDRESS.LST (the default), you will be presented with a data entry
screen.
Each record consists of five lines. Type the name, address, city,
state and ZIP code for each record, pressing [ENTER] at the end of
each line. To leave a line blank, press [ENTER] at the beginning
of the line. Enter this information exactly as you wish it to
appear on your envelope. If your address is only three lines long,
you will press [ENTER] at the beginning of Line 4 and Line 5.
DJLOPE (as does the Post Office) will expect the Zip code to appear
at the end of the last line of the address in order to create the
PostNet barcode. If there is no five- or nine-digit Zip code at
the end of the last line of the address, DJLOPE will not print a
PostNet barcode. A nine-digit Zip code must have a hyphen between
the first five digits and the last four digits.
When you have typed the five lines, you will be prompted 'Is all
data correct? [Y/N].' If it is correct, press 'Y'. If you need to
edit (change) a line, press 'N' to make corrections. The record you
just entered will be displayed (with line numbers). Press the line
number you want to edit, and retype the entire line correctly, then
press [ENTER]. When you have completed corrections, press 'Q' to
return to the next screen.
After each record is entered, you will be offered a choice of
continuing. Choosing 'E' will allow you to enter more names as
described above. Choosing 'P' will allow you to print an envelope
addressed to the record you just entered (see choice P below).
Choosing 'M' will return you to the Main Menu.
The number of records contained in the current database is
displayed at the bottom of the data entry screen. The computer
will beep if you attempt to add more than 250 records to any one
database. Please open (create) a new database if you have reached
this limit before adding too many records to a database.
=================================================================
Q - QUICKPRINT AN ENVELOPE WITHOUT SAVING ADDRESS
=================================================================
Choosing 'Q' at the Main Menu will allow you to print an envelope
without saving the address in your database.
Your screen will simulate an envelope. Type each line as you wish
it to appear on the envelope, pressing [ENTER] at the end of each
line. When you have completed the five lines (and an optional
ATTN: line), you will be prompted to continue, or make corrections
in the address.
If you wish to print the address, press 'P' and you will be asked
to insert an envelope face down on the printer tray, snugly up
against the rollers. Then press the two LOAD keys on the printer's
top panel to load the envelope into position.
Press any key to print the envelope. Press 'Q' to abort and return
to the Main Menu. To eject an envelope that has been loaded but
not printed, press the 'RESET' key on the printer.
=================================================================
P - PRINT AN ENVELOPE FROM DATABASE
=================================================================
To print an envelope from a record previously entered into the
database, press 'P' at the Main Menu. You will be prompted for a
search string.
Pressing ENTER at this prompt allows you to scroll through all
records, one at a time, in the order they were first entered.
Searching the database for a particular record is one of the most
powerful features of DJLOPE. You can type in any search string
(criteria) you wish: Name, street, ZIP code, state. The search is
done without regard to upper or lower case. You can even type in
part of a name or part of a city and DJLOPE will display all the
matches it finds, one at a time. The first record to meet your
criteria is displayed on the screen.
Pressing 'P' will print the record displayed, 'E' will allow you to
edit or delete the record, 'S' will skip this record and display
the next record to match your criteria, 'M' will return you to the
Main Menu.
If you choose 'P', you may enter an optional ATTN: line, or press
[ENTER] to print the envelope. Pressing [ENTER] will prompt you to
insert an envelope face down in the printers tray, then load the
envelope and press any key to print, or 'Q' to abort and return to
the Main Menu.
=================================================================
E - EDIT RECORDS
=================================================================
Editing and deleting records can be done by choosing 'E' at the
Main Menu. Search for the record you wish to edit or delete by
entering the search criteria of your choice as described under 'P'
above. The record will be displayed on your screen. Each line
will be preceded by a number. Press the desired line number to
edit that line. Retype the entire line, then press [ENTER]. To
delete the entire record, press 'D'. Press 'X' to return to the
Main Menu.
=================================================================
N - PRINT ALL RECORDS TO PRINTER
=================================================================
Selecting 'N' at the Main Menu will allow you to print all records
in the database to the printer. Be sure the printer is turned on
and is loaded with paper before making this selection.
=================================================================
S - DISPLAY ALL RECORDS
=================================================================
To display all records (six at a time) on your screen, choose 'S'
from the Main Menu.
Your screen will display six records at a time from the currently
selected database. The name of the database in use is displayed
below the record listing.
While scanning you can:
Scroll forward..........Press PG DN
Scroll backward.........Press PG UP
Go to Main Menu.........Press ESC
Print a record..........Press F4
Press the key of your choice.
Be sure the CAPS LOCK key indicator light is off when scanning.
If you select F4 to print a record, the program will prompt you for
a record number to print. Type the number, then press [ENTER].
=================================================================
C - CONFIGURE DJLOPE
=================================================================
Selecting "C" from the Main Menu will allow you to configure DJLOPE
to parameters suited for your use, as well as make it easy to
change those parameters at any time.
SELECT DATABASE
---------------
You can change databases from this menu or from the Main Menu. For
the steps to use to change the current database, see D-Change
Database.
SELECT FONT
-----------
If your DeskJet is equipped with Hewlett-Packard font cartridges,
or if you are using a DeskJet 500 or 500C, you may select a font
from this menu. The currently selected font will be highlighted.
The initial default font is the internal Courier font. If you wish
to change the font selection, press the letter corresponding to the
font you wish to use. This font will become the default font for
future sessions of DJLOPE until you change it. DeskJet 500 users
may select the I or G option for those internal fonts. Press any
key to return to the Main Menu after selecting the desired font.
CONFIGURE RETURN ADDRESS
------------------------
You will probably want to create your return address before you
start using the rest of this program.
DJLOPE supports using up to six return addresses. These return
addresses are treated like a regular address database, except that
they are stored in a database created by the program called
RETADDR.LST.
In order to create a return address(s), first you must make
RETADDR.LST the current database. (See D-CHANGE DATABASE section
below) This database can contain from one to six return addresses
that you can use with DJLOPE.
After you have created a return address database, make any other
database the current database and press "R" at the Configuration
Menu to configure the use of your return address by DJLOPE.
The screen will display the current return address in use (or blank
lines if you have not created a return address yet).
You may toggle the printing of your return address on or off (Y for
print, N for no printing). This is handy if you sometimes use
envelopes with a pre-printed return address. The status of this
toggle is always displayed at the bottom of the screen in the
status bar.
You may also choose to print your return address in a smaller size
than the send-to address. Pressing "R" (the initial default)
chooses regular size, "S" chooses a smaller size.
Pressing "A" will cycle you through up to six return addresses that
you have already created and stored in the RETADDR.LST database.
When the return address you wish to print is displayed on the
screen, press "X" to return to the Main Menu.
All changes made in this menu will be saved as the default for the
next session of DJLOPE.
SELECT PRINTER PORT
-------------------
Choosing "P" at the Configuration Menu will allow you to change the
printer port configuration for DJLOPE.
Options are press '1' for LPT1: (the default), press '2' for LPT2:,
and press '3' for LPT3:. You choice will become the default port
for future DJLOPE sessions.
C - CHANGE ADDRESS MARGINS
--------------------------
Choosing 'M' at the Configuration Menu will allow you to change the
margins for the address. The program defaults at a left margin of
4.0 inches and a top margin of 2.2 inches. The current margins are
displayed on the status line at the bottom of your screen.
To change the position the address prints from the left edge of the
envelope, press 'L', then the number of inches (to the nearest 10th
of an inch) from the left of the envelope where you wish printing
to begin.
The change the position the address prints from the top edge of the
envelope, press 'T', then the number of inches from 1.0 to 5 (to
the nearest 10th of an inch) from the top of the envelope you wish
printing to begin. A value larger than 2.5 will not print the
address properly on a standard #10 business size envelope. Larger
values are useful, however, when printing larger envelopes. I use
the program to send out registered copies of the program in 6" x 9"
envelopes using a left margin of 5 in. and a top margin of 5 in.
If you choose a setting that will not print a #10 business size
envelope correctly, you will see a warning message to that effect.
The setting will work for larger envelopes, however, and is
necessary for these larger envelopes.
Any changes you make to these settings will become the default
margins until you choose to change them.
TOGGLE POSTNET BARCODE PRINTING
-------------------------------
Pressing 'B' will toggle the printing of the PostNet barcodes on
your envelope. The current state of this toggle is indicated on the
status line at the bottom of the screen. If "BAR" appears, the
barcodes will print, otherwise the barcodes will not print.
EXIT TO MAIN MENU
-----------------
Pressing 'X' from the Configuration Menu will return you to the
Main Menu.
=================================================================
D - CHANGE DATABASE
=================================================================
DJLOPE now supports the use of multiple databases to hold
addresses. This feature will allow you to keep separate groups
(friends, clients, Christmas card list, etc.) in unique files.
All files in the current directory (where the DJLOPE.EXE file
resides) are displayed on your screen. To select another database
or create a new one, type a filename of up to eight characters. It
is not necessary to type an extension. DJLOPE defaults to an
extension of .LST. To stay in the current database, press [ENTER].
To change databases, type the name of the database (without the
.LST extension) and press ENTER. You can immediately access
addresses in the new database, or add, delete or edit those
addresses.
Whichever database is currently in use when you exit DJLOPE will
also be the database in use the next time you load the program.
The program will display only files with a .LST extension. It is
suggested that you use this convention in naming new database files
so they will be displayed each time you want to select a new
database.
=================================================================
X - EXIT TO OPERATING SYSTEM
=================================================================
Selecting 'X' at the Main Menu will return you to the operating
system and end your DJLOPE session.

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it,
you are expected to register. Individual programs differ on
details--some request registration while others require it, some
specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything
from the simple right to continue using the software to an updated
program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of
comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad
ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The
author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the
software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
example, some authors require written permission before a
commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting
your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because
the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the
ultimate money-back guarantee--if you don't use the product, you
don't pay for it.
=================================================================
DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
=================================================================
Users of DJLOPE must accept this disclaimer of warranty: "DJLOPE is
supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or
implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of
merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes
no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result
from the use of DJLOPE."
DJLOPE is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but
please do not give it away altered or as part of another system.
The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal
computer users with quality software without high prices, and yet
to provide incentive for programmers to continue to develop new
products. If you find this program useful and find that you are
using DJLOPE and continue to use DJLOPE after a reasonable trial
period of 30 days, you must make a registration payment of $14.95
to Jerry M. Johnson. The $14.95 registration fee will license one
copy for use on any one computer at any one time. You must treat
this software just like a book. An example is that this software
may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from
one computer location to another, so long as there is no
possibility of it being used at one location while it's being used
at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons
at the same time.
Commercial users of DJLOPE must register and pay for their copies
of DJLOPE within 30 days of first use or their license is
withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting
Jerry M. Johnson.
Anyone distributing DJLOPE for any kind of remuneration must first
contact Jerry M. Johnson at the address below for authorization.
This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
recognized by the Association of Shareware Professionals as
adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such
distributors may begin offering DJLOPE immediately (However Jerry
M. Johnson must still be advised so that the distributor can be
kept up-to-date with the latest version of DJLOPE.).
You are encouraged to pass a copy of DJLOPE along to your friends
for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if
they find that they can use it. All registered users will receive
a copy of the latest version of the DJLOPE system, and will be
notified of future enhancements.

principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-
related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member

disks. Just slip a floppy (3 1/2" or 5 1/4") in Drive A
or B, and your printer will produce a sleeve template
containing all the file names, dates, and sizes in the
root directory of your floppy. Just cut out and tape the
flaps, and you have a neat storage sleeve without the
hassle of writing many tiny filenames on a disk label.
Available on HPPER Library 5 of CompuServe as SLEEVE.ZIP,
or from the author.
